Val Dean Koch, 89, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2022 surrounded by family.
Val Dean was born on June 18, 1933, in Norfolk, NE, to Mildred (Albers) and Fred Koch. Val Dean graduated from Aurelia High School in 1952. Following graduation, he traveled to Washington DC and worked in the F.B.I. in the office of J. Edgar Hoover. Val then entered the United States Air Force and served for four years.
Val met Margaret “Peg” Hix at the Cobblestone in Storm Lake where they were often found cutting a rug. Val and Peg were united in marriage in 1958. Val and Peg went on to have five children: Scott, Susan, Julie, Mike, and Katie.
Along with maintaining his farm, Val spent his working years in sales until he retired in 1998 from Garst Seed Company.
Val enjoyed his farm, planting flowers, golfing, fishing, the drawing at the Brightside, his family and friends.
Val was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Fred Koch; sister, Ardyce Wolterman; brother-in-laws, Delmar Wolterman, Dale Peterson, and Bob Hix.
Val was survived by his wife, Peg, of 63 years; his five children: Scott(Deb) Koch of Cherokee, Susan Hatch (Rob Kannegieter)of Cherokee, Julie (Jim) Peterson of Washta, Mike (Janelle) Koch of Forest City, and Katie (Steve) Schnoor of Carlisle; 15 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildrens; sister Charlene Peterson; and sister-in-law Kathy Hix.
