Mark Raymond Brighton, the son of Rev. George and Norma (Johnsen) Brighton, was born on December 17, 1962 in Belmond, IA. He graduated from Graettinger High School in Graettinger, IA. In 1987 he graduated from Westmar College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education and Elementary Education. He later graduated from Drake University with a Master of Science in Educational Administration in 1995.

Teaching and coaching were Mark’s life. He began teaching at Meriden-Cleghorn School in 1987 and continued to teach through the consolidation with Marcus in 1993 and Remsen Union in 2016. He began as a physical education instructor. Over the years, he also served as a reading and spelling instructor, health teacher, and junior high athletic director. Mark was an instructor for Northwest AEA and an adjunct professor at Morningside College. He retired from Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn-Remsen-Union in May 2020.

Mark was a talented coach, referee and umpire. Over his long career, he earned many honors and accolades which include the Iowa Middle School Athletic Director Of The Year multiple times, 1A District Coach Of The Year multiple times and was inducted into the 2021 IHSADA Hall of Fame. Mark spent many years umpiring high school/college softball as well as refereeing high school volleyball and basketball. Mark was honored to be chosen to umpire the Iowa Girls High School State Softball Tournament for more than 10 years consecutively. He also made multiple appearances in the Iowa Girls High School State Volleyball Tournament.

Mark was united in marriage to Amy Hupke. Together, they were blessed with two children, Laura and Kyle.

He attended the College World Series and at least one Minnesota Twins baseball game every year. He loved all sports, and it would be normal for him to be watching and keeping track of multiple games at the same time. He was an avid Minnesota Twins, Vikings, and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He was known to have stockpiles of Snickers candy bars in his freezer along with plenty of Coke in a can in the fridge. Most of all, Mark enjoyed every moment spent following his children through school. His kids were his everything.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Laura Brighton and boyfriend, Colin Hartman of Sioux City, and Kyle Brighton of Hinton; brother, David (Becky) Brighton of Marion; sister, Marcia Brebner of Newell; two nephews, Kolin (Nicole) Brighton of Cedar Rapids, and Zachary Brebner of Urbandale; two nieces, Valerea Brebner-Ehrhardt (Jon) of Sac City and Katie Legue (Eric) of Vinton along with many other relatives and friends.

“I was so shocked and saddened to learn of Mark's passing. I spent a lot of gym and field time with Mark as a former AD and also served on the Northwest Iowa AD's leadership team with him. He always had time for everyone, was the ultimate professional, and always had the best interest of school athletics and kids in mind. He will be missed. My condolences to the family.”

“Dear Brighton Family
It was a privilege to know Mark for many years. I was a middle school athletic director at Okoboji for 20 years. We had a lot of contact through the Athletic Directors Association. Mark was an awesome person. Incredible servant heart.

Fun memory for me:. Mark was officiating a game at Okoboji quite a while ago. This was back in the day when the gym had bleachers on the stage by the baseline. I told him:. "Use your good eye and if you are you better switch your contacts." He gave me that awesome smirk. A little later a team called timeout, Mark was on our baseline. To be funny he tossed the ball at me, I wasn't expecting it and the ball hit me right on the nose. Yes it started bleeding. He felt so bad I thought it was funny. We had a good laugh about it several times.

Mark was a tremendous man. I am praying for you all.”

“Amy & children. The reason why I addressed this the way I did is because back in the day when the 4 of you would come to H-M-S to ref, I would announce and watch the children as they did their thing in the bleachers. I was sickened when I heard about Mark, but on the other side of the coin I sat back and smiled as I remembered the fun & good times we had at the announcers table at H-M-S. Praying for comfort for all of you. Lori Hoffman”

“Kyle and Laura - our thoughts and prayers go out to you both. We were shocked and saddened when we heard the news. Your dad was such a good friend to us. We will miss the conversations about school stuff, our kids, sports, and especially the Twins and the Vikings. In fact, just a couple weeks ago, Mark came to the house and Marty and him had the exact same Twins tshirts on!! We will miss him dearly and please know that if you need anything, let us know. ”

“Like many, I was shocked to get the news of Mark's passing. We had just talked a couple days before he passed and he was doing well. Mark was a classmate of mine at Graettinger. He was a great friend, an exemplary educator/administrator, a proud Dad, and a genuinely good, humble guy! He was a sports enthusiast to say the least and I loved talking sports/stats with him. One of the hardest transitions for him was not being able to ump/ref. No doubt he's umping a baseball game up in God's country! Rest easy my friend! You will be missed by many, and likely more than you could ever have imagined. ”
