Luverne Clifford Nelson, the son of Godfred and Linnea (Nillson) Nelson, was born on a farm south of Marcus, Iowa, on May 12, 1929. His early childhood years were spent on the farm; he graduated from Marcus Community High School. He proudly served with the U.S. Army in France during the Korean Conflict. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and engaged in farming. On August 30, 1950 he was united in marriage to Alice Ralston. The couple was blessed with four children, Joseph, Linnea, Karen and Bruce. When he was able to get away, Luverne enjoyed going fishing and camping.
