In Memory of

Harold J. Nation

February 9, 1929 - January 22, 2015
Harold James Nation left this world and reunited with the love of his life on January 22, 2015. He was born to Alta May and James Nation on February 9, 1929 at Mt. Olive in Cherokee County. He was raised by his second parents Grace and West McGregor of Quimby, Iowa. Harold attended schools in Cherokee County. In 1946 he entered the Army of the United States. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Korea). He married Shirley Irene Peck on June 16, 1961 in Skamania, WA and was afforded 63 years together. This union was blessed with five children; 13 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. Harold was sure that this was surely a record. He was joyful about the recent news that number 28 would be arriving in June, 2015. Harold was a long-haul truck driver and visited every state in the country except Maine. He was a gifted finish carpenter and left his mark on many, many homes in Cherokee County. He made cradles for each of his children for the arrival of their first child. The grandchildren were gifted with original special handmade trunks or cabinets at graduation time. In his leisure time Harold enjoyed various activities; most of which he and Shirley enjoyed together. He was a true fisherman, loved animals, was a skilled cribbage player, enjoyed leisure, league, and tournament bowling, but his greatest joy came in moments spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a proud and patriotic man. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., the Military Order of the Cooties, and the American Legion. He held numerous offices within the V.F.W. to include 8th District Commander, Cherokee Post 2253 Commander, Commander Grand of the M.O.C. and the Seam Squirrel of Pup Tent 31 of the M.O.C. He was the last living member of the M.O.C. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, brothers Maynard, Dale and Jay; great-grandchild, Olivia; and his beloved wife, Shirley in February, 2014. He is survived by his son, Michael and wife Chong of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa; daughters, Penny and husband, Scott of Cherokee, Iowa, Becky and husband, Dave of Aurelia, Iowa; Carrie Oliver of Kingman, Arizona; and Patty of Iowa City, Iowa. Also surviving are his 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; his sister Charlotte Hutchinson of Sac City, Iowa; sister-in-law, Lavon Roberts and husband Rob of Cherokee, sister in law Marilyn Storbeck and husband John of Aurelia, IA; many nieces and nephews; and his coffee buddies and staff that he greeted every single day.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, January 26, 2015, at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cherokee.

Your father left you with many memories - some made of wood by his own hands, others more subtle, but all priceless. Keep your memories of him alive and he'll always be with you.”
