His childhood years were spent in Hartington where he attended school and graduated from Hartington Public High School in 1960. On September 12, 1965, Gus was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Garrett in Storm Lake, IA. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, playing guitar, camping, traveling, and woodworking. In his later years he enjoyed gardening and bird watching. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends. Gus enjoyed his coworkers and friends he met while working for Fareway. “Mary Beth

Sorry for the loss of our friend Gus. I first met you & Gus in 1975 at fareway grocery store in Algona,Ia. I transferred from Ottumwa,Ia & worked in the grocery dept. Gus always made me feel welcomed, even though he worked in the meat dept. I never forgot that. Then in 1990 we came to Cherokee, not knowing that you & Gus lived here. He always spoke to everyone & enjoyed life. ”

“I am very sorry for your loss. I pray God give you strength to lean on Him and on one another during this difficult time. I must share how I know Gus. I used to exercise at the Wellness Center in Cherokee and always seen Gus there....big 'ol smile on, happy as can be. He was always a happy person to talk to everyone and anyone. He would always tell me to keep my chin up and have a good day. Gus brightened many peoples' lives at that Wellness Center. I missed that when I moved and started at a new gym. People there aren't as friendly or acknowledge you like Gus did. He always made sure to tell you to have a good day. He will be missed!”

“Our thoughts an prayers go out to you and the family. "Gussy Bear" was a joy to work with at the meat counter. He always had a smile and brought much laughter and joy to those around him. I also enjoyed playing guitars with him when we could. Great memories of a great man!
