William Richard "Bill" Bennett, the son of Malcolm (Bill) and Hazel (Jimmerson) Bennett, was born in Storm Lake, IA on August 12, 1931. He graduated from Storm Lake High School and went on to graduate from Iowa State University with a degree in Civil Engineering.
He married Joyce Ratliff on December 27, 1953 in Ames, IA. He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1957. He then worked for the Dept. of Transportation in Des Moines, IA until 1960. Bill and Joyce moved to Cherokee, IA where he worked as Cherokee County Engineer and for the Iowa Dept. of Transportation until his retirement. They enjoyed spending their winters in Mesa, AZ where they have many friends.
Bill was an active member of Cherokee Memorial Presbyterian Church serving as an Elder and on the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of Cherokee Lions Club for many years. He enjoyed first, his family and grandchildren. He was an avid bridge player, and reader, and liked to watch all sports on TV (especially the Cardinals). He enjoyed playing golf and loved fishing with friends and family. His garden, where he spent many hours, was his pride and joy. `
Bill passed away, surrounded by loving family members, on Sunday, September 22, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA. He was 82. He was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm (Bill) and Hazel Bennett; mother-in-law and father-in-law; Joy and Vera Ratliff; son-in-law, Bob Terpstra; three brothers-in-law, Jerry Thompson, Bob Ratliff and Allen Ratliff; and nephew Ricky Ratliff.
He is survived by his wife Joyce; their children: Mary (Orrin) Erickson of Brookings, SD, Karen Terpstra of Ames, IA, Mark (Joan) Bennett of Carroll, IA, Barb (Todd) Brockshus of Spencer, IA, and David (Jennifer) Bennett of Omaha, NE; his 14 grandchildren: Jason (Les) Hagan, Stacy and April Erickson, Aslynn (Michael) Portel, Rachel (Ryan) Betts, Cindy (Bryan) Shelton, Kyle Bennett, David, Aaron, Hannah and Isaac Brockshus, Emily, Ethan and Matthew Bennett; his 4 great-grandchildren: Kaleb Hagan, Sadie and Presley Shelton, and Camden Portel; his brother Bob (Colleen) Bennett of Austin, MN, sister-in-law Janice (Al) Churchill of Longmont, CO, brother-in-law Dick Ratliff of Ames, IA; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
SERVICES
Services for Bill will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 28 at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 127 E. Willow St., in Cherokee.
