Vernon Owen Ludwig

Vernon Owen Ludwig, the son of Alvin and Ruth (Harker) Ludwig was born November 25, 1935, in Battle Creek, IA. He graduated from Ida Grove High School where he excelled in football and track. Vernon served with the United States Army as a Paratrooper. He spent two years in Germany. On July 2nd, 1955, Vernon was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Johnson in Schleswig, IA. To this union were eight children. Vernon and his wife moved to Cherokee, IA in 1957 where he worked for Modern Heating and Plumbing. He later went to work for Wilson's Meats until his retirement. Vernon was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Cherokee VFW. In his spare time, Vernon enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, watching the Cherokee boys high school baseball games, the Iowa Hawkeyes and playing cards with his friends. Most of all, Vernon enjoyed being around his family and friends. Vernon was well known for cruising around in his golf cart. On July 14, 2010, Vernon passed away at his home, The Gardens, at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Mary Ellen Ludwig in 1997; his parents, Alvin and Ruth Ludwig; and his daughter Kristie Boyd in 1999. He is survived by his children: Kim Ludwig of Bay City, TX, Kerry (Tom) Midland of Cherokee, IA, Kathy (Jeff) Scruggs of Beaumont, TX, Kelly (Elizabeth) of Richmond, VA, Keith (Kimberly) Ludwig of Cherokee, IA, Karolynn Sievers of Carroll, IA, and Kandi (Brian) Kindwall of Beaumont, TX; grandchildren: Molly (Tim) VanEngen, Kelli (Aaron) Jacobson, Raquel (Michael) Nelson, Nick Sievers, Tyler Midland, Kory Ludwig, Kelsey Ludwig, Michael Boyd, Mathew Kindwall, Courtney Kindwall, Emma Kindwall, Madeleine & Simon Ludwig; Great Grandchildren: Collen VanEngen, Cody VanEngen and Andrew Jacobson; as well as other relatives and many friends.
