Thomas Earl Flanigan

October 24, 1915 — February 20, 2011

Earl Flanigan, the son of Thomas and Mary (King) Flanigan was born October 24, 1915, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent on the family farm five miles south of Cherokee. He attended country school and following his schooling he enrolled at a Diesel Engineering School in Des Moines, IA. He later returned to Cherokee during the war to help his family with the farm. On November 21, 1942, Earl was united in marriage to Wilma Leckband in Cherokee, IA. Following their marriage they lived south of Cherokee on the family farm for a short time before moving to a farm northeast of Cherokee, where they farmed for over 60 years. Most recently, Earl was living at the Gardens in Cherokee. Earl was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. He was a man with strong faith who enjoyed farming, watching jeopardy, wheel of fortune, the news, and the weather. He enjoyed being around his family, and was always known to send birthday cards to all of his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. On February 20, 2011, Earl Passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee at the age of 95. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Mary Flanigan; his wife, Wilma Flanigan in 1996; one son, Tommy Flanigan; one daughter, Elaine Flanigan; one sister' Ruth Streeter; and two great-grandchildren, Carrson and Autumn. Earl is survived by two daughters Kathleen LaFleur and her husband Don of Minot, ND, and Rosie Schlichting of Cherokee, IA; one son, Robert Flanigan and his wife Janice of Sioux City, IA; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Rupp of Marcus, IA; one brother, Harold Flannigan of St. Paul, MN; numerous nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 23, 2011, at the Immaculate Conception gymnasium

VISITATION
Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday with the family present from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Tuesday night at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home with a rosary to follow.
