Steve was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon. He was a hand grenade expert and a M16 assault rifle sharpshooter. While in Germany, he bought a Ford Tontas wagon, with which he packed up his service buddies and visited France, Netherlands, and all around Germany. Steve had great memories of his army friends and the adventures they shared. He attended Iowa Lakes Community College upon his honorable discharge from the army.

Steve met his wife, Linda, when they were kids living down the block from each other. They renewed their friendship in 1977 and were married on their speed boat on Lake Okoboji on May 26, 1984.

Steve was a union carpenter and worked on the Bonneville Dam in Washington State, dangling on a safety line 20 stories up. He also framed houses in the Denver and Breckinridge, CO areas. One of his favorite jobs was as head groundskeeper for a professional golf course in Dallas – Ft. Worth area. Steve loved shooting pool, owning his own pool table when he was 11. While he played 8 ball, his favorite games were 9 ball and snooker. Steve’s pool career included playing 9 ball on a professional basis which earned his ranking on the pro circuit. He won many 8 ball and 9 ball single tournaments, and also scotch double tournaments with his partner, Prent Lamont.

Steve expanded his pool career by becoming an international snooker referee, and was the senior referee of the Valley Nat’l Eight Ball Assoc. (VNEA) pool system. Steve refereed the VNEA annual tournament in Nevada for 30 years, and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2017. Steve was also the head referee for Iowa Operators of Music and Amusements (IOMA) for over 30 years.
