Steven Russell Canny was born on December 22, 1954 in Osage, Iowa, to parents Clair Russell and Janice Sue (Julius) Canny. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Steve attended and graduated from Rockford High School in 1973, where he was a long-time high school record holder for the 220 yard dash. He qualified to run in the Iowa State track meet at Drake University in two events.
Following graduation, Steve worked various manufacturing jobs until his health wouldn’t allow.
On September 11, 1976 Steve was united in marriage with Sheila Rowe in Charles City, Iowa. To this union a daughter Shanda was born. The couple later divorced.
Steve was later married to Carolyn Hope at Sturgis, SD. They had made their home together in Cherokee for over 20 years.
Steve enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, doing yard work, and riding his ’79 Harley Davidson low-rider. He enjoyed attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for many years. He appreciated time spent with his family and friends and was currently attending Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Marcus.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn of Cherokee, IA; a daughter Shanda (Brandon) Zelle of Waverly, IA; four grandchildren, Tre Smith, Kylie Smith, Katelyn Zelle and Piper Zelle; his mother Janice Canny of St. Ansgar, IA; and four siblings Lorie (Roy) Wilson of Rockford, IA, Becky (Joe Stier) Sanford of Rochester, MN, Mark (Tammy) Canny of Brownsdale, MN, and Lynn (Deb) Canny of Lake Mills. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Bob (Colleen) Hollatz of St. Ansgar, IA; many nieces, nephews and extended relatives; and also his wife Carolyn’s daughter Kara (Tracy) Timmons and their daughter Katy.
He was preceded in death by his father Clair in 2000; a sister Lynette Hollatz in 1991; and his grandparents.
SERVICES
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21st at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5289 C Ave, Marcus, IA 51035
