Steve Hankens, age 65, of Cherokee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 27th, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center, among family and friends.
Born in 1945, to Don and Ivagene Hankens, Steve was a lifelong resident of Cherokee, leaving briefly only to attend college and law school at Drake University, in Des Moines, as well as to serve in the United States Army. While stationed at Fort Ord in California, Steve served as a medic, helping soldiers returning from Vietnam recover from their injuries. It was there he realized how much he enjoyed caring for people. Following his discharge, he completed his undergraduate education and went on to receive his law degree. After graduation, Steve returned to Cherokee to work alongside his father, Don, and brother, Dan, where he continued to practice for the next 38 years.
In recent years, Steve was known for his regular visits to the hospital and local nursing homes. Wherever he went, he always greeted people with a smile and a joke, and those who knew him will attest to his warm heart and generosity. Steve is survived by his sister, Ann; brother, Dan; sons, Jeff and Kevin, and their wives, Sarah and Melissa, respectively; their mother, Deb; two grandchildren; and many good friends.
