Stanley “Stan” E. Sherkenbach, 84, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, July 10th, 2022, at Care Initiatives in Cherokee, Iowa, following declining health.
Stan was born on November 18, 1937, to Ernst “Ernie” and Alta Sherkenbach. He spent his childhood years growing up in Aurelia, Iowa. He graduated from Aurelia High School in 1955. After graduation, he entered the United States Marine Corps for 2 years. Stan was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War, Post 2253, Cherokee, Iowa. Stan worked at Hygrade in Storm Lake, Iowa. He later retired after working many years in the maintenance department at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute.
Stan was married to Joan (Anderson) Sherkenbach; the couple later divorced. They have three children: Stacy, Bret, and Amy. Stan enjoyed gardening, fishing, and playing golf. During the weekdays, Stan rarely missed an episode of The Price Is Right. He also enjoyed socializing and playing cards with friends. Stan was proud of the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Alta Sherkenbach, his sister Shirley Hilsabeck, brother-in-law Ed Hilsabeck, and his nephew Kent Hilsabeck.
Stan is survived by his three children and their spouses living in Aurelia. Stacy (Jim) Bezoni, Bret (Terri) Sherkenbach, and Amy (Brad) Rohwer. His grandchildren: Spencer (Laurel) Bezoni, Bret J. Sherkenbach, Samuel Sherkenbach, Tayler (Jayden) Van Berkum, Lauren Rohwer, Cade Rohwer, and his great granddaughters Marley Bezoni and Maren Van Berkum. He is survived by a close cousin, Linda Lee from Ruthven, Iowa. He is also survived by his nephews Chuck Hilsabeck, Kirk Hilsabeck, great nieces, great nephews, and numerous friends.
The family would like to thank Stan’s friends for their care, support, and visits during his declining health. They would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Care Initiatives including the hospice team for their kindness and support during Stan’s final days.
