Sandra attempted to ring in the New Year with her birth but fell short; with being born at the Sioux Valley Hospital on December 31, 1941. She was the second daughter born to Barton and Floriene Sangwin of Meriden, Iowa. She attended Meriden Public School with her favorite teacher being Mrs. Bastian. She graduated as a member of the class of 1960.
Sandra met the love of her life in 1957; when Melvin showed up in Meriden with his best friend. Sandra and Melvin were married on November 4, 1961, at the Oakdale Church in rural Meriden.
Her first job was at Hope’s Fashion Farm as a sales clerk for 21 years and then continued at Jeanne’s Boutique. A few years later she became a home healthcare aide for the Cherokee Regional Medical Center until she retired due to health reasons. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a true farm girl always outside with her father. Sandra and Melvin took great pride in raising their three children on the farm. Her great pride was her huge flower gardens and a garden that had every possible vegetable planted in it. The highlight of the summer season was cleaning chickens and canning corn in mass amounts. Her time playing cards and any board game were highlights to many of her days. Sandra’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved to go on Sunday drives and stop by her children’s home to check in with them and get caught up on their activities. She totally enjoyed attending the grandchildren’s events as a Brave or Eagle fan. Sandra took great pride that her children had found their mates and have very wonderful families. She loved her church families no matter the affiliation; but currently her love was her church family at the Evangelical Free Church in Meriden.
On Tuesday, October 7, 2019, Sandra passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center, at the age of 77. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin in 2001, her parents, Barton and Floriene Sangwin, and her sister, Patricia Schallau.
