Roxie Behn

May 10, 1935 — July 4, 2015

Roxana (Holleran) (Christian) Behn, the daughter of Margaret (Hamilton) and Joseph Holleran, was born in Elmira, NY on May 10, 1935. She received her early education in Wellsboro, PA, and then attended Mt. Aloysius Catholic High School in Cresson, PA. She graduated with the class of 1953. On June 6, 1953, she was united in marriage to Ronald M. Christian in Wellsboro, PA. On February 14, 1981, Roxie married Walter H. Behn in Windsor, NY. Although her roots were in Pennsylvania and New York, Roxie loved Cherokee and it was where she called home for nearly 30 years. She held various managerial positions for local businesses during her working years, including JC Penny, J & K Services and Chief Cablevision. All of Roxie's favorite activities were centered on her time spent with her family or with Paul Woodall, the love of her life. She loved little kids, camp outs, fishing, playing cards, going for ice cream and especially visiting Larson Lake in Aurelia, IA. She loved having flowers grow in her yard. She had a compassionate heart, and made a special effort to reach out to comfort a friend in need. Her faith was also very important to her. Since March of 2013, Roxie was lovingly cared for by the staff at Careage Hills Nursing Home in Cherokee. They loved her feistiness and fondly called her 'Rox'. She peacefully slipped away from this life at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in the early morning hours on July 4, 2015. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Joseph Holleran, Jr., and John 'Jack' Holleran. Survivors include her loving companion of 28 years, Paul Woodall, of Sutherland, IA; her 5 children: Pandora (Dana) Phipps, Kim (Ken) Barrett, all of Cherokee, Scott (Jill) Christian of Soldotna, AK, Jill (Daren) Lynch of Oneida, NY, and Nicholas Behn of Worms, Germany; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Jane Schofield of Utica, NY; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Wilma Hagen of Cherokee; and many other friends and relatives. The family requests that memorials in Roxie's name be directed to Careage Hills Nursing Home, 725 N. 2nd St., Cherokee, IA 51012.
