Romona Colleen Schubert, the daughter of Harry and Olene (Ellufson) Shafer, was born April 4, 1929, In Storm Lake, IA. She lived in Cherokee for a short time before moving to Storm Lake, IA where she attended school and graduated from Storm Lake High School. After graduation, she worked for the Buena Vista Courthouse.
On August 28, 1949, Romona was united in marriage to Beryl Schubert in Storm Lake. They moved to a farm south of Galva in Silver Creek Township. She worked for the Galva Shopper for several years and also was a homemaker raising her two children, Creston and Drew.
Romona was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. She enjoyed golf, playing cards, traveling with Beryl, and attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities. She also enjoyed bowling and was in the Ida County Bowling Hall of Fame. Their farm was a special place for her grandchildren to visit. There were barns to explore, fields to ride go karts and ATV’s in, animals to care for, and the best fried chicken with potatoes and gravy you’ve ever had for lunch. There was always a fresh sugar cookie in the jar for a quick snack and apple pie and ice cream after supper. She had an infectious laugh and always had a smile on her face. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
