Rodney Keith Stowater, the son of J.C. and Ella (Schoenrock) Stowater, was born on May 12, 1945 in Le Mars, IA. He was born on Hospital Days so he was a “free baby.” Rod was baptized and confirmed at rural Trinity Lutheran Church, Marcus, Iowa. He attended country school until third grade. He graduated from Marcus High School in 1963.
Rod went to work for Wilson Foods after graduation. He worked there for 46 years. He also farmed north of Cherokee since 1979. As foreman at Wilson Foods he also attended many schools: electrical, scales, and welding. On September 8, 1968, Rod was united in marriage to Sandra Mahler at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
Rod enjoyed his sons’ sporting events and that carried through to his grandchildren. He was the first to yell at referees when they called something on the boys, especially his grandchildren. He also liked attending tractor pulls and has a collection of 85 John Deere small tractors. Rod loved to hunt with his boys and he never saw a gun he didn’t want or couldn’t live without.
Rod was very proud of his four sons and what they have done. He also loved hearing everyday what the grandchildren and great grandchildren were doing.
His final wish was to be buried on his favorite tractor, a John Deere 720 diesel.
On December 7, 2019, he passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 74. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Ella Stowater; father in-law, Walter Mahler; mother-in-law, Esther Mahler; brother, Darrell Stowater; brother-in-law, Larry Wheeler; two sisters-in-law, Shirley Stowater and Barb Mahler; niece, Ann Wheeler; and great-nephew, Clinton Stowater.
He will lovingly be remembered by his wife Sandra Stowater; his four sons, Darren (Lisa) Stowater, Doug (Sandi) Stowater, Phil (Jennifer Fischer) Stowater; and Ryan (Kasey) Stowater; grandchildren, Britta Stowater, Cody (Brooke) Stowater, Tonya (Matt) Draper, Derek (Jalyn Doeden) Woltman, Lauren (Andrew Hanson) Woltman, Jasey (Kade Jurgensen) Stowater, Kirk (Bailey Gaydo) Stowater, Kristian Stowater, Kyle (Abbie Kooiker), Kolton Stowater, Logan Stowater, Landan Stowater, and Layton Stowater; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Linda Wheeler; one brother-in-law, Ted Mahler; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
