Robert 'Bob' John Hanson, was born in Cherokee, IA, on December 23, 1948, to Kenneth and Mary (Delperdang) Hanson. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee, where he attended the local schools.
On September 27, 1969, he was united in marriage to Rosella 'Rosie' Smith. They were blessed with one child, a daughter, Christine. Bob worked at Wilson Foods in Cherokee for many years. Upon retiring from Wilson's, he and his brother-in-law, Kenneth Smith, started their own business, Bob & Ken's Repair, in Cherokee. They were busy for several years, keeping the vehicles in the area in tip-top condition, before Bob was forced to retire, due to health issues. He then began volunteering his time at the school in Primghar, IA, where Rose worked. He loved being around the kids and helping with their activities, often dressing as Santa. He spoke with them on the dangers of smoking. Upon Rose's retirement from the Primghar School, the couple became campground hosts at Dog Creek Camp Ground near Sutherland, IA. It was there that Bob was his happiest. He was a social butterfly. The man never met a stranger. He was definitely given the gift of gab, as visiting was what he loved to do best.
Following a lengthy struggle with his health, Bob passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2015, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center. He was 66. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Mary Hanson, his mother-in-law, Hildegard Smith, and two brothers-in-law, James Smith and Manfred 'Fred' Smith, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Rose, of Cherokee; their daughter, Christine and Jeff Nelson of Cleghorn, IA, two grandsons, David Stinson of Cherokee, and Justin Stinson of Salem, IL; a step-grandson, Dallas Nelson, and step-granddaughter, Jaci Nelson, both of Laurens, IA; two brothers, Ray and Margaret Hanson of Marcus, IA, and Mike and June Hanson of Cherokee; three sisters, Anne and Ray Newman of Sioux City, IA, Mary Lou and Al Carlson of Cherokee, and Sharon and Joel Grauer of Silver City, IA; his father-in-law, Manfred Smith, Sr. of Cherokee; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
