Robert Dean Nelson was born on June 8, 1932 in Cherokee, IA to Hugo and Ellen (Nord) Nelson. He was baptized in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee and attended country school in rural Cherokee county.
He attended elementary school in Alta and Aurelia, moving to Prescott, AZ with his parents in 1944. He attended school in Prescott, graduating from Prescott High School in 1950.
Bob joined the United States Air Force in March, 1952, serving in Japan and Korea. He returned to Cherokee in 1956 after serving four years. Bob worked in the construction and painting business for several years. He was employed at Wilson Foods (Foodbrand America) which was later called Continental Deli, for 25 years. He retired in June, 1994.
Bob was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He served on the church council and was involved in church activities. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Wescott Post #2253. He was also a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local #179.
On February 10, 1957, Bob was united in marriage to Mary Dunlap at the Arthur Methodist Church. Cherokee was their home all their married life. Their union was blessed with two sons. Michael (Jill) Nelson of Snohomish, WA and Daniel (Shauna) Nelson of Des Moines, IA. Their family was blessed with five grandchildren, Alex, Adam, and Megan Nelson of Snohomish, WA and Lilly and Evelyn Nelson of Des Moines, IA.
Bob enjoyed coffee with friends, bowling, fishing and traveling to visit his family. Bob always had a friendly smile for everyone he met. He will be missed!
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Phillip, in infancy; sisters, Astrid, Myrtle, and Margaret; brothers, Everet, Garland, and Filmore; two nieces, Sandra Carlson and Connie Allen. He is survived by one brother, Donald Nelson of Littleton, CO.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Mary Nelson of Cherokee, IA, his children, grandchildren, and many family and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa.
