Robert Alan Smith, son of Manfred, Sr. and Hildegard Smith was born on March 30, 1954 in Wagner, South Dakota. He was 1 of 12 children. He attended a Catholic Boarding School at Marty, South Dakota.
Robert moved south living in Tucson, Arizona and Alamogordo, New Mexico where he worked at a research facility. He relocated to Cherokee, Iowa to be closer to family. He then moved to Sioux City, Iowa working at the Siouxland Center for Active Generations. He loved working at the Center and made many friends there.
Rob enjoyed spending his free time fishing, camping and at social gatherings with his large family and extended family. He also enjoyed cheering on the youth at school sporting events. He was a spur of the moment social butterfly with a huge heart. He loved his visits with friends and family. We all laughed that he was a “clean freak” but to him it was just the norm. “Everyone should be cleaning this way,” he’d always say.
On Tuesday, December 14, 2021 he passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City due to complications of COVID. He was preceded in death by his parents, Manfred, Sr. and Hildegard Smith; brothers James Smith and Manfred, Jr. Smith; sisters Connie Biberdorf and Linda Lumbert.
He is survived by his brothers, Ken (Wanda) Smith of Cherokee, Louis (Vic) Smith of Cherokee, Ed Smith of Georgetown, Texas, Mike Smith of Cherokee; sisters Rosie Hanson of Cherokee, Judy (Jeff) Miller of Cherokee, Patty (Gary) Gleason of Aurelia, Iowa. He will also be lovingly remembered by many nephews and nieces.
