Richard 'Dick' J. Hirschman, the son of Ivo John 'Nick' and Irene (Davies) Hirschman, was born May 31, 1932, in Hartington, NE. He graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Hartington, NE in 1949.
From 1949 - 1953, he worked at the Ford garage in Hartington. He was drafted and served in the United States Army in 1953. His tour of duty was in Korea with an honorable discharge in 1954.
On June 6, 1955, Dick was united in marriage to Darlene Hauger in Mayfield, SD. They moved to Cherokee in August of 1955. He then started working for Curtis Candy Company as a salesman until August 1960. He then worked for Hiland Potato Chip Company as a route salesman. He worked at Hiland for 34 years- retiring in 1994. Next, he went to S.R.T.S. in the capacity of a driver. At the same time, he went to work at Bushlows (now O'Halloran's) proud to work for them for 19 years.
Dick was a devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Sports was one of his favorite past times, including stock car racing, baseball, softball, bowling, and golfing. He was also an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan.
On March 28, 2014, Dick passed away unexpectedly at his home at the age of 81. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Darlene Hirschman; one brother, David Hirschman; one sister, Donna Mae Jensen; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Goeden, Wayne Pasco, and Tom Hauger; one niece, Jodi Brier.
He is survived by his children: Steve and Kelli Hirschman of Aurelia, IA, Renee and Dan Conley of Cherokee, IA, Jan and Peter Koch of Batavia, IL, Rick and Emily Hirschman of Des Moines, IA, and Sue Hirschman of Fort Dodge, IA; six grandchildren: Tyson (Julia) Conley, Jon (Kim) Conley, Kati (Brian) Gorman, Amy (Nate) Lewis, Nick Hirschman, Christopher Koch, and Jessica Koch; five great-grandchildren: Coy and Bryn Lewis, Ella Gorman, Theo and Alivia Conley, and one great-grandchild on the way; siblings, Gene (JoAnne) Hirschman of Dakota City, NE, Fran (Bob) Lenhart of Storm Lake, IA, and JoAnne Goeden of Yankton, SD; brother-in-law, George Jensen of Marietta, GA; sister-in-law, Joyce (Frank) Suddoth of Germantown, TN; and several nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.

VISITATION
Visitation will begin at 2 P.M. Monday, with the family present from 5-7 P.M. Monday night at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a 7 P.M. prayer service followed by a K of C rosary Monday, at the funeral home.
