Richard D. Jensen

Dick was the oldest son of Arlo and Daisy (Andersen) Jensen. He was born on November 3rd, 1929 on a farm in rural Clay County, S.D. Dick attended Wakonda Star Township country school through the 8th grade and Irene High School in Irene, S.D. At the age of 16, he enlisted in the Marine Corp, celebrating his 17th birthday in Peiping,China. He served 5 years as a Marine. He then re-enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for the next 23 years. During his military career he was stationed in China, Panama, Guam, Korea, Vietnam, along with numerous bases throughout the United States. He was awarded numerous medals and acommendations during his career, including his cherished Bronze Star, Meritorious Service medal, two commendation Medals with Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, along with four Campaign Stars for Vietnam, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Citation. Dick honorably served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. Dick was a life member of the V.F.W., American Legion, DAV, Vietnam Veterans Association, Scottish Rite, Masonic Joppa 120 Lodge, and past member for 33 years of the Aloha Shrine. In 1958 Dick married Rebecca Lease in Ridgeley, West Virginia. To this union three children were born, Daisy (Penny) , Candy and Richard Jr.(Jay). Upon retiring from the military the family purchased a farm near Freeman, S.D., Rebecca lost her long battle with cancer in 1983. In 1988, Dick married Florence (Flo) Reisner Fiedler. They lived on the farm west of Irene, S.D. until 2010 when they moved to Cherokee, Iowa to be closer to Flo's family due to Dick's declining health. Survivors include his wife Flo of Cherokee Iowa, daughters Daisy (Keith) Halvorson, Dubuque, IA., Candy (Arlen) Halvorson, Edmond City, OK., and Jay (Becky)Jensen, Irene, S.D., stepchildren Leslie (Roger) Williams, Paullina, IA., Cindy (Dean) Gravenish, Mike (Angie) Fiedler, and Jeff (Lisa) Fiedler all of Cherokee, IA. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his cherished friend Dick Sherman and his wife LeAnna. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Rebecca and brothers Keith (KB) Jensen, Douglas Jensen, and Merle in infancy.
SERVICES
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, November 1, 2014, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene, SD.
