Richard Curtis, the son of Harry and Violet (Hicks) Curtis was born June 12, 1935, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee where he attended Washington High School.

 

After high school, Richard worked as a meat cutter at Fareway from 1952-1953. He then enlisted into the military from 1953-1955, where he served in Korea and worked as a cook.

 

On June 12, 1959, Richard was united in marriage to Marlys Jean Rustman. They made their home in Cherokee. He worked for the railroad for several years and then worked for Otis Haley laying brick and also helped at Hilltop Care Center. He later worked for the City of Cherokee as a Street Supervisor until his retirement in 1989. He also worked for a short time at the Cherokee Landfill.

 

Richard enjoyed fishing at the Iowa Lakes and turtle hunting with his brothers. He also loved to take his family camping to Yankton, SD on the weekends and holidays. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

 

On Monday, January 30, 2023, Richard passed away at Cherokee Specialty Care at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys Jean (Rustman) Curtis; sisters, Delores Tallman, and Diane Dicks; brothers, David Curtis, Thayne Curtis, and Dean Curtis; and parents, Harry and Violet (Hicks) Curtis.

 

He is survived by his children, Dawn (Curtis) Niemeier of Cherokee, IA and James (Chris) Curtis; grandchildren, Madison Curtis and Camryn Curtis of Mason City, IA; brothers, Harry Curtis of St. Joseph, MO, and Harlan (Trish) Curtis of Cherokee, IA; as well as other relatives and friends.
