Raymond Kenneth Hanson of Marcus, IA, age 70, passed away on the 17th of September, 2015 peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He had battled COPD and heart failure since 1999.
Ray was born in Cherokee, IA on the 21st of April, 1945. He was the son of Kenneth and Mary (Delperdang) Hanson of Cherokee. On the 16th of October, 1965 Ray married Margret Wankum at Holy Name Church in Marcus, IA.
Ray's family and pets meant the world to him. He loved his wife of almost 50 years, Margret, unconditionally. His daughter, Michele, and his son, Russell were everything to him. His three grandchildren, Danica, Taylor, and Dalton, were always around to make him smile and laugh.
He was a fisherman and gardener. He loved to watch baseball and to cheer on the Vikings. He was a lover of pets of all kinds too. The auto world was another of his loves. He was a mechanic and body man for many years. He was known for restoring Dodges and Chryslers at home in his shop, where he taught his son and grandson the love of cars. He was infamous for taking the rustic and restoring it back to its original beauty. He loved Dodge so much that his CB handle was 'Moparman'. He loved attending car shows and showing his restored Dodges. He won several awards for them.
He was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, where he had been the custodian in the 1980's. He also had been a custodian for MMC Schools.
He is survived by his wife, Margret of Marcus, his daughter, Michele (Gene Galvin) of Cherokee, his son, Russell (Emily) of Marcus, his three grandchildren, Danica of Ankeny, Taylor (Chad Weiler) of Remsen, and Dalton of Lakefield, MN.
Ray had five siblings, Anne (Ray) Newman of Sioux City, the late Robert (Rosie) of Cherokee, Michael of Cherokee, Mary (Al) Carlson of Cherokee, and Sharon (Joel) Grauer of Silver City, IA. He is also survived by brothers-in-law Bill Wankum of Sioux City, Don Wankum of Merrill, IA, Ron (Mary) Loucks of Quimby, IA and sister-in-law Kathy Wankum of Marcus and many, many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ken and Mary, his brother Robert, his in-laws, Paul and Anna Wankum, two sisters-in-law, Mary Loucks and Diane Wankum, and a brother-in-law, Raymond Wankum.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 21, 2015, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus.
