Phyllis G. Peterson

August 11, 1930 — January 24, 2019

Phyllis Georgene was born in Yankton, SD on August 11, 1930, to Edna (Ideker) and George Lau.

Her childhood years were spent in the Hinton, Iowa area where she attended country school and graduated from Hinton High School in 1946. She received her teaching certificate from Morningside College and taught in a country school near Cleghorn. Through the years, Phyllis would continue her education by first becoming an LPN, and later an RN. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Buena Vista College. In 1950, she married Gerald Peterson, and was blessed with three children, Pamela, Kelley and Brent.  Her family was expanded to also include Kenneth Fassler, Mark Peterson and Abbie Peterson (Smith) during their teenage years.

Phyllis never grew tired of learning and reading, and was especially interested in history. Her curiosity about the world led to her to travel around the United States and beyond, including Germany, France, Spain and China. She also enjoyed sewing and cooking. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Book Club and Neighborhood Club.

On Thursday, January 24, 2019, Phyllis passed away at Accura Healthcare in Cherokee. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Marilyn Stolpe, and granddaughter, Nicole Peterson.

Left to cherish her memory are her children and their families: Pamela and Tim Christensen and children, Drew and Sky, of Carter Lake, IA, Kelley Clausen and son, Lance, of Kent, WA, and Brent and Mary Peterson and daughter, Natalie, of Cherokee; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cherokee Public Library Book Fund (Cherokee, IA) and Lutheran Lakeside Camp (Spirit Lake, IA).
