Phillis Maxine Kulaszewski, the daughter of W.E. 'Gene' and Marie (Baum) Blankenbaker was born December 22, 1919 in Cherokee, IA. Her childhood years were spent in Cherokee where she attended school. Following her schooling she joined the Women's Army Air Corps from 1942 - 1944. In 1965, she became a mother to Karen and DuWayne.
Phillis was a proud Charter and Life Member of AMVETS Post 218 and Cherokee VFW Auxiliary. She was raised and lived many years in Cherokee, IA and the last two years at Windsor Manor Assisted Living Community in Vinton, IA. Phillis was a WWII WAAC, devoted mother, wife, and friend.
On August 22, 2011, Phillis passed away at the Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gene and Marie Blankenbaker; one brother, Ralph; her husband, Art; one grandson, Nicholas Gibson; and one niece, Sandra Newman.
She is survived by her children: KarenAnn (Denny) Miller of Vinton, IA, and DuWayne Kulaszewski of Waterloo, IA; one brother, Darrel (Marcella) Blankenbaker of Cherokee, IA; three grandchildren: Danial Kulaszewski, Derek (Sara) Kulaszewski, both of Waterloo, IA, and Leah (Lucas) Andreas of Vinton, IA; four great-grandchildren: Hunter, Keenan, Nicole, and Riley. Phillis was blessed with 10 nieces and nephews that all loved her dearly. She is also survived by a great many great-nieces and great-nephews as well as many great-great nieces and nephews.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, August 27, 2011, at the Immacualate Conception Gymnasium.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Dept. of Iowa AMVETS sholarship program.
