Phillip Edward Simmons, the son of Claude and Mary (Pigott) Simmons was born on October 23, 1932, on a farm in Silver Township in Cherokee County, IA. His childhood years were spent near Quimby, where he attended country school. He later attended and graduated from Quimby High School in 1950.
On July 2, 1950, Phillip was united in marriage to Shirley Johnson. Together, they farmed in Silver Township for over 40 years. They moved to Cherokee, IA, in 1996 and he worked part-time for the Hy-Vee Warehouse until he was 80.
Phillip was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a Eucharistic minister. He enjoyed playing golf and was known for his great sense of humor. He enjoyed having breakfast with his friends at Hy-Vee on Sundays and in later years really enjoyed the wonderful staff at The Gardens Assisted Living. He followed the St. Louis Cardinals, IA Hawkeyes and the KC Chiefs. Phillip will also be remembered for being friendly and kind to everyone he met. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends.
Phillip was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Simmons; parents, Claude and Mary Simmons; daughter, Karen (Kit) Lee; grandson, Matthew Simmons; granddaughter, Brooke (Simmons) Goodwin; one brother, Wayne Simmons; and one sister, Caroline Hueschen.
He will lovingly be remembered by his children: David (Corliss) Simmons of Quimby, IA, Kathryn Hempel of Urbandale, IA, Mary (Gary) DeWitt of Hermann, MO, and Melissa (Martin) Kohn of Cherokee, IA; a son-in-law Perry Lee of Alta, IA; one brother Gene (Darlene) Simmons of Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home - Cherokee
Visitation with will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday, with family present from during that time at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. A prayer service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday evening following visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 16, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. Father Daniel Rupp will officiate.
