Peter John Cosgrove, age 95 of Cherokee, IA, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023, at his home in Cherokee, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. Father Dan Rupp will officiate. Burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cherokee. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Friday, with family present from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday night at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a 7:00 p.m. prayer service and rosary following the visitation Friday, at the funeral home. Peter J. Cosgrove, age 95, passed away on Sunday September 24th at his home in Cherokee Iowa with his family by his side. He joins his wife Mary (Dushinske), son Stephen, daughter Leanne, son-in-law Chris and great grandson Ethan.

Peter graduated from Immaculate Conception School in 1946. Mary and Peter were married in 1948 and had six children; Stephen (Janice), Leanne, Janel (Matt Schleef), Lori (Jensen), Dawn (Brad Greer), Beth (Randy Ripke) as well as 20 grandchildren, and presently 30 great grandchildren. Family gatherings were one of his favorite events.

He was proud to have been the youngest Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for which he and his family were active members.

In retirement he enjoyed golfing, volunteering, playing poker with friends, spending time with his family and attending his grandchildren’s activities come rain or shine, but drew the line at dance recitals.

His stories were animated and we enjoyed listening to them, whether it be about teen escapades with Mary and his friends, his parents and sisters Jean (McCullough) and Margaret Ann (Olson) or working at the Illinois Central Railroad. He couldn’t get through a story without laughing. He had an infectious laugh, a quick wit and a whistle that could travel miles to call us home.  We will miss him dearly.
