Palmer Franklin Hanson was born in Sioux City, IA on March 12, 1921 to Lars and Alma (Anderson) Hanson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Elk Point, SD. He attended rural schools in South Dakota. At the age of 15, Palmer joined the Civil Conservation Corp. (CCC) at Belle Fouche, SD for two years. Then he went to Minnesota and worked on farms. In 1947, he was discharged from the Navy, having spent six years in the North Atlantic and Pacific areas. He was a gunner on merchant ships, was sunk twice, and had to spend time in a hospital in Russia. He later served as a Sea Bee in the Philippines. When he was discharged from the Navy, Palmer returned to Spink, SD. He farmed, drove truck, and was a butcher for a locker plant. He later bought a gas station and became a salesman for the Standard Oil Company.
Palmer married Ruth Weins in 1952. To this union three sons were born, Dale and twins Lyle and Leon. In 1958, the family moved to Iowa where Palmer farmed and made many friends in and around Cherokee. In 1982, he retired and spent many years playing golf and traveling all over the United States and Norway where he and Ruth attended the Berg family reunion.
On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, Palmer passed away at Cherokee Regional Medical Center at age 92. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Leon; two brothers, Rodney and Darrell; one sister, Adell and her husband Milton; brothers-in-law, Stanley Solberg and Einer Jensen, and a sister-in-law, Shirley Hanson.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; son Dale and his wife, Melanie of Cincinnati, OH, and son Lyle and his wife, Darlene of Whitter, CA; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Megan, Leon, Mary and Blake; one great-grandchild, Brandon; brothers, Robert Hanson of Alcestor, SD and Kenneth (Phyllis) Hanson of Pocahontas, AR; sisters, Evelyn Solberg of Alcester, SD and Lois Jensen of Cambridge, MN; other family members and many friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee.
