Orville Melvin Saxby

Orville 'Sax' Melvin Saxby the son of Melvin and Rose (Piehl) Saxby was born on October 27, 1930, in Peterson, IA. His childhood years were spent in Peterson where he attended school and graduated from Peterson High School. After school Sax worked for Fastenow Plumbing. On January 27, 1952 Orville was united in marriage to Lila Grauer at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. In February he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. In January of 1954 Orville received his honorable discharge from the Army and moved to Cherokee. Orville worked for Standard Oil in Cherokee until 1989. He then worked at the Cherokee School District in the maintenance department until his retirement in 1992. Orville was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cherokee. He was a Boy Scout leader since 1962 and in March received the Legend Scouting Award commemorating 50 years of work with the Boy Scouts. One of his proudest moments was watching his son Michael achieve his Eagle Scout Award. He loved working with the scouts and lived by the quote 'It's better to build boys than to mend men.' Orville was a lifetime member of the LA Wescott Post 2253 in Cherokee. He was a supporter of the Cherokee Synphany, enjoyed delivering mobile meals, and helped with the Oak Hill Cemetery directory. Orville was also a member of Little Sioux Wildlife, and was a well known handyman that could fix anything. He loved to help anyone that he could and that was evident in 2013 when he and his wife Lila were the recipients of the Cherokee Citizens of The Year Award. Most of all Orville loved spending time with his family and friends. On Tuesday, June 20, 2017, Orville passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center at the age of 86. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Rose Saxby; sisters Velma Robinson, Ida Krumm, and Vera Saxby; brothers-in-law, Russell Robinson, Charles Stoner, Dale Grauer, Orville Krumm, and Robert Grauer; and sister-in-law, Carole Grauer. He is survived by his wife, Lila Saxby of Cherokee, IA; his son, Michael (Mary) Saxby of Olathe, KS; grandson, Mark Saxby of Denver, CO; granddaughter, Micah Saxby of Olathe, KS; and his in-laws, Evelyn Stoner, Darlene (Don) Radke, Wilma Grauer, Shirley (LeRoy) Larsen, Sherald Grauer, Mary Ann (William) Rasmus, and Marjorie (Joe) Veale; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
