Nis Laursen, Jr., the son of Signe (Miller) and Nis Laursen, Sr., was born on April 19, 1933, in Beresford, SD. He moved with his family to Cherokee, IA, where he first attended country school, and then Cherokee Public High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1955.
Nis was united in marriage to JoAnn Rupp on June 14, 1957 in Cherokee, IA. He worked as a welder for many years, and then went into farming, which he continued to do until his retirement.
He greatly enjoyed time spent with his grandsons and great-grandchildren. Horses were his passion for many years. When his health would allow him, Nis loved to fish, play cards, maintain his yard, visit with his neighbors, and spoil his house dog Cricket. He passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, just two days prior to his 79th birthday. He was preceded in death by his son, Dan in May of 2005, his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, JoAnn; his daughter, Darly (Douglas) Gochenour of Cherokee; a daughter-in-law, Sue Laursen; his grandchildren, Brian (Rhiannon) Gochenour of Mankato, MN, and August (Gus) and Nathan Laursen of Larrabee; great-grandchildren, Riley and Maddie; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
