Nathan A. Phipps II, DVM was born to Nelson and Susan (Jones) Phipps on a farm on the northeast side of Cherokee. This farm has been in the Phipps family since 1856. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1948, and then served in the army infantry from 1948-1949. Nate then attended undergraduate and Veterinary Medical School at Iowa State, graduating in 1956. He returned to Cherokee and joined Dr. A. W. Krause in a local large animal veterinary practice. This partnership eventually became Phipps, Sonka, and Hiller.
Nathan was united in marriage to his lifetime friend Virginia E. Wise in 1953. To this union six children were born: Anne Phipps of Sioux City, IA; Nathan A. Phipps III (Miriam) of Dakota Dunes, SD; Pat Phipps (Theresa) of Moville, IA; Jean Paterson (Buzz) of Storm Lake, IA; Chuck Phipps (Jeanne) of Charlotte, NC; and Ginny Bright (Kenny) of Cherokee, IA.
In addition, Big Nate is survived by twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Upon his retirement from veterinary practice, he joined the family's Nomad Travel Agency business. He was also actively involved in farm management.
Nathan served on the Cherokee City Council as well as the Work Activity Board. He served on the board and became president of the Cherokee Country Club. Nathan was an active member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association and the Interstate Veterinary Group.
Nathan's interest included golf, travel, flying, hunting, fishing, scuba diving and attending high school and college sports events. In addition to being a very busy veterinary and raising his children, he and his surviving wife traveled the world.
Nathan was preceded in death by his parents, sister Arlene, and great-grandson Noah.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, October 31, 2014, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.

VISITATION
Visitation will begin at 4 P.M. Thursday, with the family present from 5-7 P.M. Thursday night at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a 7 P.M. prayer service Thursday night at the funeral home.
