Michael Francis Waters, the son of Francis and Leone (Carr) Waters, was born in Sioux City, IA on September 6, 1926. When he was 3 years old the family moved from their home in Anthon, IA, to Cherokee, IA, where he received his early education. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in Cherokee, and later studied Liberal Arts for 2 years at Creighton University in Omaha, NE.
After working at the JC Penny store and Earl May garden center in Cherokee for a time, Mike served his country in the US Army, and then joined with his father and brother, Leonard, in the service station business. Together, Mike and Leonard owned and operated 3 different stations in Cherokee. When he wasn't changing oil or doing tune-ups, Mike loved spending time in his garden. His 'green thumb' produced a yard that was a sight to behold. He was given the 'Yard of Merit' award for Cherokee one year. He achieved his Master Gardner status at age 75. He also enjoyed antique shopping and the companionship of his special Boston terrier, Minny.
Following a brief illness, Mike passed away at Unity Point St. Luke's Health Center in Sioux City, IA, on Monday, March 31, 2014, having reached the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Leonard and Fr. Robert.
Survivors include his sister Mary Jane Waters of Cherokee; his beloved nieces and nephews: Michael (Deb) Waters of Ft. Collins, CO, Anne (Don) Mullison of Lincoln, NE, Julie Currie of Des Moines, Cheri (Tim) Costlow of Van Meter, IA, and Robert (Cari) Waters of Spirit Lake, IA.
