Michael Leon Mitchell, the son of Ira and Deloris (Hackett) Mitchell, was born October 12, 1954, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent primarily in the Quimby and Washta, IA area where he attended school. He graduated from Willow High School in 1973. He then enlisted in the United States Marines and completed basic training. He was later medically discharged.
Mike worked for Stieneke Trucking before purchasing his own truck. He spent several years as a truck driver. He then worked for Hubbard Feed in Alta for many years where he was the plant superintendent until his retirement.
Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. He was known in the family as the handyman, who could fix anything. In his free time he loved to fish and ice fish. Most of all, he loved the time spent with his family and friends.
On Friday, July 15, 2022, Mike passed away at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, IA, at the age of 67. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Deloris Mitchell; grandchildren, Brianna Lame and Christina Martin; and one sister, Cathie Jo Williams.
He will be remembered by his children, Jenny Mitchell of Spencer, IA, Cherie (Richard) Lame of Cherokee, IA, Crystal (Jamie) Hughes of Aurelia, IA, and James Mitchell of Quimby, IA; six grandchildren: Anthony Stewart, Samantha Shephard, Alexis Mitchell, Matthew Hughes, Tyler Hughes, and Abigail Nierling; two brothers, Warren (Jan) Mitchell of Aurelia, IA, and Jeff (Tracy Halfen) Mitchell of Springfield, MO; three sisters, Annette Mitchell of Cherokee, IA, Carolyn (Phil) Wright of Cherokee, IA, and Jennifer (Jim Peterson) Brenner of Alta, IA; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
