Melburn Paul Louie Schmidt

February 18, 1917 — February 18, 2017

Melburn Schmidt, son of George and Lillie (Wiese) Schmidt, was born in Calumet, Iowa, on February 18, 1917. He graduated from Larrabee High School in 1935. He married Bernice Hocken in 1938, and the two became the parents to four sons, Dennis, Donald, John and Steve, before Bernice passed away. During this time, he also served in the U.S. Army. In 1950, he married Marjorie Mayer. They had two sons, Gary and Todd. Marjorie also preceded him in death. On August 20, 1988, Mel married Cheryl (Drefke), and the couple enjoyed 25 years together before Cheryl's death on July 28, 2013. Mel had several vocations, but the one he is most remembered for was his expertise in painting and wood finishing. Many folks in the Cherokee area have reaped the efforts of his talents. He was preceded in death by all three of his wives; his parents; sons Todd and Steve; three brothers, Gerald, Wayne and Bill, and one sister, Evelyn. Melburn is survived by his sons: Dennis and his wife Judy of Le Mars, IA, Donald and his wife Trish of Beaufort, SC, John and his wife Jackie of Aurora, IL, and Gary and his wife Kristy of Mesa, AZ; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren.
