Matthew Hap Lee, the son of William and Linda (Gravenish) Lee was born October 16, 1974, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee where he attended school and graduated from Washington High School, class of 1993. Matt went on to excel at college for the next seven years or so at WIT in Cherokee and Sioux City. While there, he earned degrees in English, Business, and Marketing. It is believed that there were only three classes offered by WIT that he didn’t take during his career and they all involved meat butchering. He didn’t want to invest in the knives.
Matt was a jokester and loved playing jokes on his brothers especially at Christmas time. Whether it be him giving his brother’s life size cardboard cutouts of himself to having t-shirts made with his picture on that says “my brother is a genius” he always had a trick or two in the works. Matt also enjoyed sports. He was a diehard Hawkeye and Bulls fan. He enjoyed bowling, fantasy football, and time spent on the golf course with his Wednesday night friends. Matt was a talented writer and artist who loved making his own comic strips. He once joined Twitter just so he could send Jimmy Fallon Tweets in the hopes that he would read them live on the air, which did happen, twice!
More than anything, Matt was a loyal son, brother, uncle, and friend who would do anything for anyone. He adored the time spent with his family and friends, especially his nieces and nephews. His kindness, quirky personality, and sharp funny wit were infectious and the reason he was loved by so many.
On Wednesday, August 14, 2019, Matt passed away unexpectedly. He was preceded in death by his father Bill Lee; grandparents, William and Phoebe, and Hap and Lucy Gravenish; aunt and uncle, Ken and Molly Lee; aunt, Toby Gravenish; and 2 angel babies ( Bob and Donna ).
He will lovingly be remembered by his mother, Linda Lee of Cherokee, IA; brothers: Shawn Lee of Cherokee, IA, Bob (Donna) Lee, and their daughter Lainey of Cherokee, and David Lee and his children, Katelyn, Treyton, Jadelyn, and Coleton of Adel, IA; close friend Brandon Ruschmann (Crystal ); and all of his close friends from the class of 1993, whom he dearly loved.
