Mary Ann Anderson, age 90 of Cherokee, IA, passed away Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Accura Healthcare in Cherokee. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2025, at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden, IA. Pastor Tyler Stauffer will officiate. Burial will be at Liberty Township Cemetery, rural Meriden, IA. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. The Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.
Mary Ann Anderson, the daughter of Fritz and Ethel (Peterson) Ogren, was born on September 27, 1934, on the family farm in Cherokee County, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent on the farm in the Washta and Grand Meadow area. She attended school and graduated from Grand Meadow High School in 1953. She loved sports, especially basketball. She scored 50 points in one game when she was a senior.
On February 15, 1957, she was united in marriage to James H. Anderson at Oakdale Free Church. Following their marriage, they made their home on the farm near Larrabee. She worked as a bookkeeper at Swanson’s Warehouse for four years. She was a stay-at-home mother until her three boys were older. She then worked in alterations at Hopes Fashion Farm. She then helped at the Country Shop, making curtains and drapes. She later worked as a flower designer at Rhoadside Greenhouse for 15 years.
Mary Ann loved gardening and growing flowers. She also enjoyed attending all of her children’s events.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, James Anderson; parents, Fritz and Ethel Ogren; three sisters, Betty Arlene Kimball, Shirley Ryan, and Carole Grauer; and two brothers, Arnold Ogren and Robert Ogren.
She will be lovingly remembered by her three sons, Galen (Kate) Anderson of Gresham, OR, Gregory (Daryl) Anderson, and Alan Anderson and his partner Angie Clark of West Des Moines, IA; seven grandchildren; one sister, Linda Kardy of York, PA; sister-in-law, Yvonne (Sis) Ogren of Mount Airy, MD; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
