Marjorie J. Sullivan, the daughter of John "Ed" and Fern (Neal) Tawney, was born on April 30, 1920 on a farm near Osmond, NE. When she was six months old, the family moved to Omaha, NE, and then two years later, to Sioux City, IA.
In 1935, she moved to Cherokee where she graduated from Wilson High School. She was united in marriage to Ernest Sullivan on September 10, 1937 in Sioux City, IA. She lived in Cherokee until 1942. She then moved to Sioux City and then to Portland, Oregon where she worked as a Machinist Expediter for WWII ship builder, Willamette Iron & Steel Co.
During Ernie's Army service, she moved to Stockton, CA. She went to work for the State of California as Secretary to the Supt. & Medical Director of the Stockton State Hospital. She worked there from 1945 until 1972, when she retired and moved to the mountains above Stockton. In 1978, she returned to Cherokee, except for brief periods in Reno, NV and Cincinnati, OH.
Marjorie enjoyed dancing, reading, gardening and bowling. She loved music, old movies, and Katie Scarlett, her 13 year old companion Boston Terrier.
On July 3, 2013, Marjorie passed away at Careage Hills Nursing Home at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Sullivan; her parents, Ed and Fern Tawney; sister-in-law, Margaret McGaffin; and brother-in-law, Durwood Sullivan.
She will lovingly be remembered by her sons: Gary (Pamela) Sullivan of Yachats, OR, and Greig (Donna) Sullivan of Cincinnati, OH; 5 grandchildren: Sean Sullivan of Laurie, MO, Michael (Melissa) Sullivan of Shawnee, KS, Lorrie (Shawn) Stewart of Marshalltown, IA, Randy (Colleen) Burris of Chatsworth, CA, and Nicholas J. Pasley of Portland, OR; 6 great-Grandchildren: Derek Sullivan of Laurie, MO, Issabella Sullivan of Shawnee, KS, Lilliana Sullivan of Shawnee, KS, Kai Burris of Chatsworth, CA, Skyler Burris of Chatsworth, CA, and Nate Burris of Marshalltown, IA; two sisters-in-law, Betty (Robert) Barcus of Spokane, WA; and Billie Sullivan of Medical Lake, WA; one cousin, Wilma Ernster of Cedar Rapids, IA, one step-sister, Ruth Anderson of Cherokee, IA; two nieces: Susan E., and Walden Barcus; and other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Graveside memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee.
