Marilyn K. George

On November 17, 2017, while holding her husband Chuck's hand, Marilyn K. George, slipped from the grips of a short illness and into the hands of her loving and merciful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A celebration in Heaven ensued as angels sang and trumpets sounded and Marilyn was greeted by so many loved ones who have gone before her. For all of these truths, her loved ones here are so happy for her, while mourning her passing and beginning the celebration of her life here on Earth. The daughter of Porter Eugene Roach and Frances Irene Roach (Frieze), she was born in Maryville, Missouri on June 8, 1944. She was the oldest of 8 children, and took great care of her siblings growing up. Life was not always easy, but that crew was close and Marilyn told many stories about their adventures together growing up. We will miss those stories and the enthusiasm with which she recalled them. After moving to Cherokee, Marilyn was married to Richard 'Butch' Bergert in 1963, and together they had six children. According to her, they were the best and the brightest. She proved how much she loved those kids in the ways she took care of them. All the cooking (the best food), cleaning, medical care, clothing, laundry, and frankly, behavior interventions for 6 kids could not have been easy. She even found time to coach some softball, organize birthday parties, take her family to Sioux City for some shopping, and most importantly, she made sure everyone made it to church every Sunday. On August 1, 1991, Marilyn married Chuck George. Staying active was the legacy for these two, including the way they had numerous rigorous battles on the tennis courts of Cherokee, and really, any place they could find a court, even on trips around the country to see her kids. In fact, Chuck will tell you that she defeated him in a game only a few weeks prior to her passing. This is not surprising, given the fire that burned in Marilyn to keep moving, to be strong, and to live life to the fullest. Part of this zest for life also included SO MANY photos being taken to remember the moments that mattered to her with family, the long hikes everyday around the M.H.I. in any kind of weather in order to see deer and God's other creations, and her unabashedly singing out whatever song was on her heart. She also loved competing on local volleyball and softball teams and met some of her best, life-long friends in those local leagues. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Richard and John Roach, a brother-in-law, Tim Grauer, and many other loved ones who meant so much to her. Remaining to mourn her death and celebrate her life are her husband Chuck of Cherokee, Iowa; six children: Shawn (Brian Bunkers) Bergert of San Bernardino, CA, Tami Collins of Cedar Rapids, IA, Trevis (Nicole) Bergert of Tullahoma, TN, Ellisha (Craig) Bennink of Cedar Rapids, IA, Payt (Rachel) Bergert of Shellsburg, IA, and Lucas (Nicole) Bergert of Belgrade, MT; 15 grandchildren: Isabella Collins; Caleb, Nathan (Rachel), Hannah, Sarah, Abram, Eli Bergert; Tyler, Garret, and Gabrielle Bennink; Jonah, Isaiah, and Alaina Bergert; and Mikayla and Ariel Bergert; One great-granddaughter Eleanor Bergert; Siblings Jim Roach of Maryville, Bill (Karen) Roach of Maryville, Julia Grauer of Denver,CO, Deborah (Mike) Fox of Cherokee, Cordelia (Brad) Kintigh of Ft. Dodge, IA; her cousin and best friend Karrol Nelson and many, many other cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
