Marilyn Ann (Berg) Stiles was born in Ute, IA on Aug. 27, 1937. She was the first of seven children born to Ralph and Helen (Hartigan) Berg.
Marilyn attended St. Boniface Catholic School in Charter Oak, IA. She received her high school diploma.
She married Carl Backhaus in 1955 and they had four children. Through the 60's and 70's, Marilyn worked as a nurse's aid at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital and Buena Vista County Hospital and raised her family. She moved to Colorado in 1982. While in Colorado she became certified and worked as an addiction counselor. She moved back to Cherokee in 2000 and has enjoyed her retirement at Willowbrook Apartments. She was a member of First Church of Christ of Cherokee and was active in Bible studies and volunteered at church and The New Leaf. She enjoyed having coffee with friends, reading, and family time.
Marilyn will be missed by a large family which was her pride and joy in life: Her daughters Sheree (Brad) Booth of Aurelia, Janene (Mark) Braunschweig of Cherokee, Carla (Bruce) Peterson of Aurelia, and son Bruce (Kathy) Backhaus of Newman Grove, NE. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Allan and Adam Booth, Dana and TJ Braunschweig, Leigh, Katina, and Destiny Peterson, and Keith and Elisabeth Backhaus. Marilyn also has 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: Bill (Sylvia) Berg of Tacoma, WA, Jerry Berg of Sioux Falls, SD, Ron (Mary)Berg of Cherokee, and JoAnn (Ben) Reed of Spirit Lake, IA and brother-in-law Royden Rupp.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter Brooke Anderson, a sister Elaine Rupp, and a brother Jim Berg.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, February 20, 2012 at the First Church of Christ in Cherokee.
