Margaret was born January 13, 1910 near Woodbine, Iowa to Andrew and Katherine (Rath) Ostermeyer. She was the oldest of eleven children and grew up on the farm. Margaret's father took her out of school when she was in the fourth grade. She wasn't happy with that as she liked going to school. She and her sister worked on the farm with the horses and mules. Margaret liked the mules because they wouldn't tangle in barbed wire or founder themselves like the horses did. Margaret had a pony named Billy that she loved and rode everywhere. At the age of eighteen Margaret left the farm to go to work for her aunt.
Margaret married Jerry Sipes in 1931 and they farmed near Correctionville, Iowa until Jerry's death in 1952. Margaret worked as a housekeeper until she married Roland Hiller. Margaret and Roland farmed near Pierson, Iowa. After Roland's death Margaret moved to Cherokee where she had purchased a home.
Margaret was a member of the CRMC Auxiliary quilters and was involved in sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She won many blue ribbons at the fair for her work. Margaret made over 100 afghans for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She wrote the family history and her own autobiography. Margaret was active and drove until she was 97 years old. At the age of 98 Margaret entered Careage Hills after a stroke took away her speech.
Margaret will be remembered for her love of flowers, fishing, renewing old dolls and their clothes, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and growing African violets.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Katherine Ostermeyer, 3 brothers and 6 sisters, a son, James, her husbands Jerry Sipes and Roland Hiller. She is survived by a daughter Jean Ressell of Kingman, Az.; son William (Dorothy) Sipes of Cherokee; daughter Betty (Dale) Zupp of Washta, IA; son Paul (Linda) Sipes of Pueblo, Colorado; and a sister, Evelyn VanMeter of Kansas City, Missouri; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great grandchildren.
