Marcella Faye Nelson

Marcella Faye Nelson, age 91, of Cherokee, Iowa passed away Friday, March 29, 2019 at Accura Health in Ames, Iowa.

 Marcella was born March 16, 1928 in Cherokee County, IA to Frank and Mildred (Mann) Gerjets. She attended school in Cherokee and graduated from Wilson High School. While attending school, she worked at Woolworth’s and later at the telephone company in Cherokee.

 Marcella married Filmore Nelson on March 26, 1948. They lived in the Schaller, Cherokee and Larrabee areas and raised their family on a farm near Larrabee. After retiring from farming in 1986, they moved to Cherokee and were caretakers for Tim and Patty Greenwood at the Greenwood Funeral home for 18 years.

 Marcella worked at the Larrabee School lunch program and was also a Homecare Health Aide. Later she was manager of the congregate meal program in Cherokee until her retirement.

 Marcella was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee. She was grateful for her faith, family and friends.

 Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kay (Bill) Flynn of Erie, CO; Barb (Marlin) Huey of Ankeny, IA; Gary (Deb) Nelson of Ames, IA and Mary (Dave) Mayer of Oak Ridge, NJ. Grandchildren: Patrick (Carrie) Flynn of Campbell, CA; Mark (Leslie) Flynn of Annapolis, MD; Laura (Matt) Kirchoffner of Erie, CO; Ryan Flynn of Seattle, WA; Sara (Teresa) Craig-Huey of Erie, CO; Aaron (Amanda) Huey of Altoona, IA; Claire (Dave) Chmura of Rogers, MN; Anne (Jeremy) Gerritsen of Jeffersonville, IN; Britt (Greg) Stephanson of Calgary, Canada; Leigh Nelson of Ames, IA; Linda Wilton of Big Sky, MT; Tyler Wilton of Salt Lake City, UT; Elliot Wilton of Vail, CO; Eric Wilton of Da Nang, Vietnam.  Great Grandchildren: Zachary, Liam and Carter Flynn; Ethan and Bradley Flynn; Kayla and Elodie Kirchoffner; Paige and Greta Chmura; Drew and Katie Gerritsen; Quinn and Harris Stephanson; Finn and Graham Craig-Huey; Anna and Ella Scott and Sophia Huey. Sisters: Mary McComb of Florida; Norma (Dean) Mongan of Cherokee and brother: Don (Carol) Gerjets of Cherokee;  sisters In-Law: Mary Ann (Merlyn) Miller of Cherokee and Mary (Bob) Nelson of Cherokee. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Filmore Nelson and siblings Betty Leonard, Elaine Trapp and Max Gerjets.
