Louis F. Mohning

July 30, 1926 — August 20, 2018

Louis Frederick Mohning, the son of Louis and Wilhelmina (Wiebke) Mohning, was born July 30, 1926, in Marion Township in Plymouth County, IA. His childhood years were spent on the farm where he attended country school.

On September 14, 1949, he was united in marriage to Lillian Bystrek at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen. Louie worked road construction for a short time before he began farming at their home south of Marcus and Remsen on the county line. Louie continued to farm and drive a school bus route for 13 years. He retired from farming in 2010, and moved to Marcus.

Louie was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. He was an avid golfer, cheered for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Twins. Other past times enjoyed were fishing, bowling, tinkering in the yard and going on casino runs. Most of all, Louie enjoyed spending time with his family playing cards and puzzling.

On Monday, August 20, 2018, Louie passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA, at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lillian in 2006; and four infant children: David, Laurie, Lonnie, and Larry; four sisters and three brothers.

He is survived by his children: Les (Pam) Mohning, Lee (Lori) Mohning, Loren (Lynn) Mohning all of Marcus, Lisa (Doug) Engel of Le Mars, IA, and Louie (Kathy) Mohning of Remsen, IA; 22 grandchildren; forty plus great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray Mohning of Kingsley, IA; two sisters-in-law, Rita Bystrek of Omaha, NE, and Mary Scollard of North Canton, OH; and several nieces; nephews; other relatives; and friends.

Pallbearers are Louie’s grandsons and honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters.

SERVICES

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 24th at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus.

OFFICIATING

Father Eugene Murray will officiate.

VISITATION

Visitation will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 23rd, at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Marcus.
The family will be present from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be follow the visitation at 7:00 p.m.

Burial will be at Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen.
