Lois E. Timmins was born on December 17, 1919, in Manson, Iowa, the daughter of Rose (Kaufman) and Oscar Calmer. She was the sixth child of eight children. They resided on their family farm outside of Manson throughout her childhood. Lois attended a one room school when growing up. After graduation, she trained to be a cosmetologist. She owned her own shop in Cherokee.
Lois was united in marriage to T.J. (Joe) Timmins in Cherokee on June 18, 1941. They moved to Spencer and then to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where Joe worked for Internal Revenue Service. At this time, they began growing their family. They moved back to Cherokee in 1948, At that time Lois stayed home and raised their six children. She was a Cub Scout Leader, volunteered for Catholic Daughters of America, and found great support and humor with a large group of neighborhood friends. Lois and Joe loved dancing and socializing with many friends in their early years of marriage. Later, Lois loved to play bridge with a variety of groups. She was so enthused about playing cards that one afternoon, in her later years, she delayed hospitalization for a broken pelvis for hours so she could play the afternoon card game. She enjoyed going to movies, community theater, and the symphony. Crewel work was another passion of hers, and she made many personalized pictures for her family and friends. She was always enthused about food, and especially loved any kind of pie. Her cinnamon rolls were so special that no one has been able to duplicate them. She was always ready to go at a minute’s notice, and never refused an invitation—even if she didn’t know the destination. Lois was an amazing woman who was loved by everyone. Her children were so fortunate to have her as their role model and friend for so many years.
