Lillian 'Billie' (Collins) Horacek

Lillian 'Billie' (Collins) Horacek was born January 13, 1921 at Marcus, IA to William Collins and Laurena (Ryan) Collins. She graduated from Holy Name School. Following graduation, she taught country school of three years. She attended school in Des Moines to become a telegraph operator. Billie then moved to California and then Hawaii where she worked for Western Union. She later moved to Washington DC with her sister Mary Barrett. Billie was united in marriage to Hubert Horacek in 1950. She did a lot of traveling with her husband. He was with communications with the State Department. They traveled to Africa, England, Brazil, Lebanon, and Ireland. She loved to sew and took tailoring classes in England. She also took oil painting lessons. Several of her paintings belong to different members of the family. She enjoyed bridge, pulling weeds- her own as well as her neighbors, attending garage sales, and was known as a gracious hostess. Billie's Christian faith was an important part of who she was. Billie loved life and enjoyed people. She will be lovingly remembered as a devoted wife and aunt who always had a smile on her face. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Billie moved to the Heartland Care Center in 2013. She was very appreciative of the staff that cared for her and thoroughly enjoyed watching the birds at the center. On June 5, 2016, Billie passed away at the care center at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents and several brothers and sisters. Left to mourn are her three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Donard Collins, Betty Seggerman, and Bonnie Means and her husband Percy; and many other loving relatives and very special friends. At Billie's request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Holy Name Catholic Church, Marcus, Iowa.
