Leo Fred Fondroy Jr.

Leo "Fred" Fondroy Jr, age 79, of Cherokee, IA, passed away at an Omaha, NE, hospital following complications from a recent surgery. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. Father Dan Rupp will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee, IA. Visitation with the family present will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, IA. There will be a 7:00 p.m. prayer service Wednesday, following visitation. Military rites will be conducted by the Cherokee V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post 2253 and the American Legion. The Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee, IA is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.greenwoodfuneral.com.

 Fred was born September 26, 1944, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was born premature and brought home in a shoe box. Despite his small size at birth, he made a big impact on the world. Fred grew up in Albert City and graduated from high school there. After high school Fred served his country by enlisting in the Army. After retiring from active duty in Germany, Fred married Patricia Plagman on June 19, 1970, in Royal, Iowa.

Fred continued service as a Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Cherokee County Magistrate, and beloved Insurance Salesman. Fred will always be remembered for his quick wit, love for life, coffee with his buddies, and always up for a drink with family and friends, especially while enjoying the outdoors. Fred will be remembered by his family and friends for his love for life, deep faith, unconditional love and many stories.

Fred is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years, Pat Fondroy of Cherokee; daughters, Tami (Gary) Allbaugh, of Indianapolis, IN, Stephanie (Jeff) Edler, of State Center, IA, Mollie (Rob) Tjelmeland, of Roland, IA; 10 grandchildren: Mailey (Will) Prim, Ryon Allbaugh, Wyatt Edler, Whitney (Jared) soon-to-be Johnson, Sienna Edler, Elizabeth Edler, Aubrey Edler, Sawyer Edler, Delanie Tjelmeland and Kami Tjelmeland; Sisters; Eleanor (Vic) Johnson and Louise (Lynn) Faust and nieces and nephews.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents Leo Fred and Nellie (Terry) Fondroy, sister Harriett Nancy Fondroy.
