Karon L. Schoonover

Karon L. Schoonover, age 72 of rural Paullina, IA, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 23, 2023, at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee, IA. Pastor Deb and Gregg Stano will officiate. Burial will take place at Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids, IA. Visitation with family present will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Friday night at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. Karon L. Schoonover, the daughter of Leonard and Doris (Lohse) Tuttle, was the first baby born at the Westbrook, Minnesota Hospital on January 26, 1951.

Karon decided to become a nurse after a traffic accident and served as one, at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute for 28 years, before taking an early retirement.  She was united in marriage to William Schoonover.

Karon enjoyed living on the acreage, working in the garden, traveling to visit the kids when they lived far away, reading, music, people, and life. She was secure in her faith, confident in her beliefs, and sure of her eternity. She is loved and missed.

Karon was diagnosed with dementia on October 15, 2021, and struggled with it until her death on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Doris and Leonard Tuttle; one brother, Wayne Tuttle; and one niece, Holly Tuttle.

She will lovingly be remembered by her husband of 35 years, William G. Schoonover; two sons, Brandon Kliegl of Paullina, IA, and  Ryan Kliegl of Rapid City, SD; one daughter, Naomi Kliegl of Sutherland, IA; one step-son, Joshua Schoonover of Rockwell City, IA; one step-daughter, Emilee Schuck of Fort Walton Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Ulysses, Azura, and Owen Kliegl; four step-grandchildren, Elisha, Jamie, Baley, and Caleb Schoonover; and other relatives and friends.
