June Jeanette (Nash) Pigott, was born in Cherokee, Iowa, July 18, 1932, to Frank and Della (Rovn) Nash. She attended the local schools, where she was the Drum Majorette for the award winning Wilson High School marching band. She was a very gifted musician both vocally and on the piano.
She married William Pigott on September 10, 1951. The couple was engaged in farming, with June being an active part of the operation. She rendered lard, milked cows, drove the baler, and sold eggs, all while herding a rambunctious bunch of kids as their family grew. Along with her own six children, Kathy, Frank, Jon, Larry, Linda, and Carol, June embraced the role of surrogate mother when she welcomed Roger Ashbaugh into her fold.
June’s hard work extended off the farm as well, as she volunteered her time and energy to many others. She was active in her church—she taught Catechism, played the organ, sang in the choir, played the bells, and sang for countless funeral masses. She was an excellent seamstress, and spent hours sewing uniforms for the Young Singers, and knitting baby sweaters for all new births at the Sioux Valley Hospital. She was bookkeeper for the Ladies Union, and also a member of the Library Committee, where she researched historical society information. She had a lifelong love for the sport of bowling, and attended many National Bowling events through the years. Those trips brought her much enjoyment and built numerous lasting friendships. An avid baker, June treated family and friends to “the best” cinnamon rolls and homemade donuts.
June passed away at Accura Health Care in Cherokee on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at age 85. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Olson, and son-in-law, Steve Olson.
Survivors include her husband, Bill of Cherokee; her children: Frank (Jody) Pigott of Cherokee, Jon (Becky) Pigott of Correctionville, IA, Larry (Mary) Pigott of Meriden, IA, Linda Loucks (Bob Harney) of Iowa City, IA, Carol (Tom) Loebach of Spirit Lake, IA, and her surrogate son, Roger (Julie) Ashbaugh of Cherokee; 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; her sister, Helen (Dale) Sturgeon of Arnolds Park, IA, and her brother, Frank (Jean) Nash of La Grange Park, IL.
The family suggests memorial gifts in June’s name may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
