Jon Richard Peterson, age 74 of Cherokee, IA, passed away Friday, August 11, 2023, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee, IA. Funeral services will take place at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the Greenwood-Schubert Funeral Home in Cherokee. OBITUARY

Jon Richard Peterson, the son of Richard and Hazel (Swanson) Peterson, was born November 29, 1948, in Cherokee, IA. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee, IA, where he attended school and graduated from Washington High School in 1968. After high school, Jon enlisted in the U.S. Navy.

Jon worked for several years laying brick and later worked in maintenance at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Cherokee. He then went to work for the City of Cherokee at the Wastewater Treatment plant for over 28 years, until his retirement in 2008. To keep busy, Jon then went to work for Main Street Pharmacy, part time serving as a medication delivery man. He loved the friends he made and the conversations he had with the many people he would see daily.

Jon was an avid fisherman. He also had a love for hunting, trapping, collecting coins, Coca-Cola memorabilia, and cheering on his Iowa Hawkeyes. He also enjoyed playing poker with his family any chance he could. Most of all, Jon loved spending time with his family and friends.

On Friday, August 11, 2023, Jon passed away unexpectedly at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Hazel Peterson; one brother, Don Peterson; sisters, Bonnie Pope and Nona Grohe; brothers-in-law, Terry Alberts and Tim Alberts; and his in-laws, Laverne “Jake” and Ella Alberts.

He will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Rhonda Peterson of Cherokee, IA; daughter, Melissa Sydow of Arkansan; sons, Jared (Jill) Peterson of Cherokee, IA and Chad (Candace) Peterson of Poulsbo, WA; grandchildren, Nathan Sydow, and Kylee and Kimber Peterson; brother-in-law, Rick (Kim) Alberts of Booneville, MO; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
