William M. Sauer, son of Milo and Mae (Caley) Sauer, was born on June 19, 1931 in Cherokee, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Cherokee, Iowa. John furthered his education by attending St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN and University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was involved in the Korean War from 1952 - 1954.
On January 14, 1957, John married Mary Ann Schoening at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee, IA. To this union four children were born, Nancy, Joan, Tom and Bill. John and Mary made their home in Cherokee, IA.
John was a longtime member of the Cherokee business community as owner of Sauer's Clothing, located on Main Street. John took over the business from his father, Milo. The business started as Gildner & Sauer in 1926. In their retirement years, John and Mary spent the winter months in either Arizona or Texas.
John was an avid golfer, Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals fan. A favorite family memory is the weekend of May 1987 when John and Mary Ann, both scored Holes-in-one on consecutive days at the Cherokee Country Club. Mary scored hers on Hole #4 during their Friday evening couple's league and John scored his on Hole #8 the next day during his usual Saturday afternoon round of golf.
On December 25, 2011, John passed away peacefully, with his family at his side, at Parkland Hospital in Omaha, NE at the age of 80, after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer. John was preceded in death by his parents, Milo and Mae Sauer and his beloved wife, Mary Ann Sauer.
John is survived by his children, Nancy Sauer of Minneapolis, MN; Joan (Mark) Maszk of Omaha, NE, Tom Sauer and Bill Sauer of Omaha, NE, one granddaughter, Caley Mae Maszk of Omaha, NE, other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00-7:00 P.M. Wednesday night at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, followed by a rosary at the funeral home.
