John “Jack” Francis Hughes, the son of Michael and Mary (McNeill) Hughes was born April 15, 1932, in Omaha, NE. His childhood years were spent in Omaha, where he attended school. He graduated from St. John’s Grade School in 1946, and Omaha Creighton Prep in 1950. He then attended Creighton University where he earned a business accounting degree in 1954. Jack was drafted and served with the Army for two years and was honorable discharge on September 25, 1956.
Jack was united in marriage to Barbara Neumann on October 17, 1964, at St. Cecelia Cathedral in Omaha. Jack worked for Wilson Foods in cost accounting in Omaha. In 1961, he became plant manager. They moved to Illinois in 1975, where he worked as a supervisor for Wilson Foods. He eventually moved to Cherokee, IA in 1986 and managed Wilson Foods until his retirement in October if 1995.
Jack enjoyed watching baseball and basketball. He was a member of the Quimby Golf Course and liked bowling. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Most of all, Jack enjoyed the time spent with family and friends.
On November 14, 2021, Jack passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center in Cherokee at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Hughes in 2001; brother, Bernard Davis; brother, Michael Hughes; and sister, Rosemary Kelley.
He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Mary Hughes of Coon Rapids, IA; son, J. Patrick (Sonja) Hughes of Shakopee, MN; two grandchildren, Anna (Anthony) Underwood, and their son, Chase, and Maxwell Hughes; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
